Where the trail goes
The Nepal Everest Base Camp trek starts at Lukla, follows the Dudh Koshi valley through Phakding and Monjo to Namche Bazaar, then continues towards Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. Base Camp is an out-and-back walk from Gorak Shep; Kala Patthar is a separate viewpoint walk. This is the south-side trekking approach, not a route to the summit.[1]
Use the route outline below to read an operator’s map. It explains the junctions and walking distances; it is not a surveyed navigation map, GPX track or day-by-day ascent recommendation.
[1] Nepal Tourism Board: Base Camp route geographyRoute outline: Lukla to Base Camp
Lukla → Phakding → Monjo/Jorsale → Namche Bazaar → Tengboche → Pangboche → Dingboche → Dughla/Thukla → Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp → back to Gorak Shep.[1][2]
Monjo and Jorsale sit on the lower-valley approach before the climb to Namche. Above Namche, the Tengboche branch reaches the monastery before continuing through Pangboche. A different outward branch visits Phortse; Intrepid uses that branch outside its stated winter substitution. These are different tracks on a map, not alternative spellings of the same village.[1][3]

| Your decision | Distance in the Exodus itinerary | What that distance covers |
|---|---|---|
| Lukla → Phakding | 9.3 km | Lower-valley first section; the trail descends as well as climbs. |
| Phakding → Namche Bazaar | 13.3 km | River crossings, Monjo/Jorsale and the steep final climb to Namche. |
| Kyanjuma → Tengboche | 6.4 km | Starts at Kyanjuma, not Namche; descends to Phunki Thangkha before climbing to the monastery. |
| Tengboche → Dingboche | 11.8 km | Via Devoche and Pangboche, then up the Imja valley. |
| Dingboche → Lobuche | 8.8 km | Via Dughla and the memorial area above it. |
| Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Base Camp → Gorak Shep | 13 km | A combined section including the Base Camp visit and return, not merely Lobuche to Gorak Shep. |
| Gorak Shep → Kala Patthar → Gorak Shep → Pheriche | 13.6 km | Combines a viewpoint ascent with the subsequent descent to a different overnight village. |
How far is the whole Everest Base Camp trek?
A single round-trip figure can hide different routes and side walks. Adding the 12 published walking distances in the Exodus itinerary gives 134.5 km. That total includes its Namche–Khumjung–Kyanjuma excursion, the Dingboche side walk, the Base Camp visit, Kala Patthar and its return stages. It is a sum of that operator’s estimates, not a surveyed universal length for every Lukla–Base Camp trek.[2]
The table uses the kilometre column exactly as published. Distances are approximate, and two operators may combine different endpoints: Intrepid, for example, quotes 8.5 km for Lukla–Phakding and 10 km for Phakding–Namche. Do not mix one operator’s shorter stage figures with another operator’s total and call the result an exact measurement.[2][3]

Gorak Shep is the final lodge settlement on the approach. The Base Camp visit continues beyond it and returns to the lodges. Kala Patthar is a separate climb above Gorak Shep, used for views of Everest; reaching Base Camp does not mean you have also visited that viewpoint.[1][2]
On the return, a plan may use Pheriche rather than Dingboche, or Tengboche rather than the outward Phortse branch. Read both directions of the route. A package described as a loop can still retrace much of the lower Dudh Koshi valley.

For offline navigation, obtain a current trekking map or offline map that shows the actual Phortse or Tengboche branch, the Dingboche/Pheriche junctions and the Gorak Shep spurs. Download it before leaving reliable connectivity. Keep the written village sequence with it; a straight line between Lukla and Base Camp does not describe the walking trail.
Use these distances to understand the proposal, not to judge a safe ascent schedule or a guaranteed walking time. The package comparison explains how to compare route choices and included support.

The walk begins at Lukla, but the travel needed to reach its airstrip is separate from the trekking distances. Keep airport transfers, flights and disruption days outside any walking-kilometre total.
