Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes: route, time and Cho La
Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes links the two valleys over Cho La. Compare Gokyo-first and Base Camp-first routes, package duration and the fallback if the pass cannot be crossed.

How the Gokyo route reaches Everest Base Camp
A Gokyo-first trek leaves the usual Base Camp approach beyond Namche, heads through Dole and Machhermo to Gokyo, then crosses the Ngozumpa Glacier to Tragnag. Cho La connects Tragnag with Dzongla; the route then joins the main Base Camp corridor towards Lobuche, Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp. Kandoo publishes this sequence in its combined programme.
This is a route connection, not a short excursion from the lakes. Gokyo Ri is a separate viewpoint above Gokyo, while Base Camp is reached from the Gorak Shep side. A package needs to name each visit: the words Gokyo Lakes do not by themselves promise Base Camp, Gokyo Ri or every lake.

Base Camp first is a different sequence
Adventure Consultants describes the reverse connection in its 2026 Gokyo Extension notes: leave the existing trek for Dzongla, cross Cho La to Dragnag, then cross the Ngozumpa Glacier to Gokyo. Its return continues through Machermo towards Namche and Lukla. Tragnag and Dragnag are different spellings used by these operators for the Gokyo-side staging settlement.
The order changes which destination you reach before the pass decision. If Base Camp is your main reason for travelling, a Base Camp-first proposal puts that visit before the Gokyo extension. If the lakes are the priority, Gokyo-first does the reverse. Neither order guarantees that both destinations will be reached, and this comparison does not establish a medically preferable direction.
Adventure Consultants: 2026 Gokyo Extension trip notesHow long does the combined trek take?
Kandoo markets an 18-day combined trip, counted from arrival in Kathmandu to departure from Kathmandu. Its itinerary includes the Gokyo approach, a Tragnag staging stop, the Cho La crossing, Dzongla to Lobuche and the Base Camp visit before the return. Eighteen days is that product’s duration, not a minimum or a universally suitable schedule.
Adventure Consultants calls its Gokyo addition a four-day extension, but its detailed sequence continues beyond the lake visit through Machermo, Namche, Lukla, a weather spare day and the return flight. The notes explicitly say the walk rejoins the original trek schedule. Do not compare four extra days with an 18-day complete trip: obtain one joined-up arrival-to-departure calendar showing where the original return has been replaced.
Adventure Consultants: 2026 Gokyo Extension trip notesWhat changes in the cost and support?
The combined route adds named lodge stops and a pass section; compare the extra staff days, meals, equipment and contingency accommodation rather than a headline supplement alone. Kandoo lists teahouses on a room-only basis and excludes trekking meals and drinks while separately including drinking water. Adventure Consultants lists meals and porter support in its extension, but excludes personal insurance and rescue or early-departure costs. Those are different packages, not evidence that all Gokyo combinations have the same inclusions.
Require the quote to cover the guide and porter arrangements on the changed route, any additional nights and the charges if the pass is abandoned. A statement that permits are included is not an itemised explanation of park entry, local registration and TIMS policy.
Kandoo Adventures: Gokyo Lakes and EBC route and inclusionsIf Cho La cannot be crossed
The two valleys can be approached separately from the lower trail network. Combining both without the high-pass connection means descending and taking another valley approach, or dropping one objective; it is not a same-day substitute for Cho La. Agree which destination would be omitted if the calendar cannot absorb that change.
Keep pass-contingency time separate from the Lukla flight buffer. FCDO warns that mountain weather causes flight delays and common cancellations. A spare day already used waiting for a crossing is no longer spare for the journey out. Do not book an onward international connection on the assumption that a helicopter will recover the original itinerary.
FCDO: Nepal trekking hazards, mountain flights and insuranceChoose the combination or one valley
Choose the combination when visiting both the lakes and Base Camp justifies a longer programme and you accept that conditions can remove the pass connection. A standalone Gokyo route suits a lakes-led trip that does not need Base Camp. The standard Base Camp route avoids making Cho La part of the journey. The full Three Passes circuit adds Kongma La and Renjo La as well; it is not another name for this two-valley link.
This guide compares route scope and booking terms, not personal fitness or an approved ascent schedule. FCDO identifies altitude illness, snow, avalanches, rockfalls and glacial hazards in Nepal’s mountains. Obtain qualified advice for your health and proposed overnight sequence; a published operator timetable is not individual clearance.
