Everest Base Camp Nepal vs Tibet: south-side trek or north-side tour?
Nepal’s Everest Base Camp trip is the Khumbu walking route through Namche and Gorak Shep. Tibet’s north-side visitor trip is usually an organised overland tour via Lhasa and Shigatse toward Rongbuk. They are different journeys, with separate entry rules and different visitor endpoints.

Identify the trip before comparing packages
If your itinerary names Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Dingboche and Gorak Shep, you are researching Nepal’s south-side trek. Nepal Tourism Board describes the conventional trip as a roughly two-week walk starting and finishing at Lukla, with teahouse stops along the route.[3]
If it names Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse, Tingri and Rongbuk, you are researching the Tibet side. Tibet Vista’s eight-day example combines Lhasa sightseeing with an overland journey to the Everest visitor area and a return to Lhasa.[7] Neither the shared “EBC” abbreviation nor a photograph of Everest makes the two products interchangeable.

| Your decision | Nepal: south side | Tibet: north side |
|---|---|---|
| Route landmarks | Lukla → Namche → upper Khumbu → Gorak Shep → Base Camp | Lhasa → Gyantse/Shigatse → Tingri → Everest visitor area near Rongbuk |
| Main travel experience | Multi-day walking with village and teahouse stops | Organised road tour with city sightseeing and a mountain-view visit |
| Example trip length | About two weeks for the conventional trek described by Nepal Tourism Board | Eight days in Tibet Vista’s cited Lhasa-return product; not a universal minimum |
| Visitor endpoint | South-side Base Camp approach from Gorak Shep | Tourist area near Rongbuk; do not assume access to the climbers’ camp |
| Permission planning | Nepal entry and route-specific trekking/park arrangements | China entry arrangements plus Tibet travel permit and organised tour |
| Best match | You want the Khumbu walking journey and its settlements | You want a Tibet sightseeing journey with a north-face Everest visit |
Nepal: choose this for the walking journey
The Nepal route connects the Dudh Koshi valley and Namche with Tengboche, the Dingboche or Pheriche area, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. The final approach visits Base Camp; Kala Patthar is a separate viewpoint above Gorak Shep.[3] Those distinctions matter when comparing a package promising a Base Camp visit with one advertising Everest views.
Lukla flights are the usual access in the tourism board’s description, but lower walking approaches also exist. Keep the trek’s walking duration separate from Kathmandu nights, transport days and disruption buffers. Our itinerary and route-distance guides describe those sections rather than treating all “14-day” products as identical.
[3] Nepal Tourism Board: south-side Base Camp routeTibet: the visitor area is not an expedition permit
Tibet Vista’s current trip notes distinguish the tourist area near Rongbuk from the former visitor site, which it describes as reserved for climbers with special permits.[7] Use that as an operator’s explanation of its visitor product, not permission to walk beyond the authorised endpoint. A normal sightseeing booking does not establish access to an expedition camp.
The cited product schedules Lhasa sightseeing, travel via Gyantse and Shigatse, an Everest-area night and a return to Lhasa. Its accommodation text mentions a tent hotel or Rongbuk guesthouse, while other notes discuss seasonal changes. Obtain the exact overnight property and visitor endpoint for your departure; do not assume every north-side tour sleeps at the same place. No exact endpoint elevation is asserted here because the operator’s own page uses inconsistent figures.
[7] Tibet Vista: Lhasa–Everest route and tourist-area distinctionTibet permits are separate from choosing a country
FCDO’s China regional advice says travel to Tibet and the Tibet Autonomous Region requires a permit through a specialist travel agent in China and an organised tour. It also warns that authorities can stop issuing permits without notice or restrict travel even when a permit has been issued.[4]
A Nepal trek permit does not answer the Tibet permission question. Equally, a Tibet tour booking does not resolve your China entry eligibility. Nationality, entry route and the dated itinerary must be checked against the relevant entry rules. On the Nepal side, use the separate permit guide for the park, local and TIMS distinctions rather than importing a Tibet permit list.
[4] FCDO: Tibet permits and organised-tour requirementDo not assume an overland Nepal–Tibet connection is available
Checked on 25 October 2026, FCDO’s China advice still carries a warning about flooding and landslides on 26 August 2026 in Gyirong County, Shigatse, near the Nepal border. It reports severe damage to roads, buildings and communications and warns that the situation may change rapidly.[5]
This does not prove every Tibet itinerary is closed. It does mean that a Lhasa-return tour and a Kathmandu-border crossing are different booking decisions. The existence of an advertised overland package is not evidence that its crossing and road are usable on your date. Keep any border leg conditional on current official and local confirmation.
[5] FCDO: current Nepal–China border flood warningLess walking does not mean no altitude risk
A vehicle-based north-side tour may involve less walking than the Nepal trek, but it is not an altitude-free alternative. The CDC notes that physical fitness does not protect against altitude illness and that unacclimatised travellers can be at risk when sleeping at altitude.[6] Neither the table nor an operator’s eight-day itinerary certifies safe acclimatisation for an individual.

Choose Nepal when the objective is walking through the Khumbu settlements to the south-side Base Camp approach. Choose a Tibet itinerary when the objective is Lhasa and the plateau road journey with a north-side Everest visit. Compare total travel days, overnight places, included transport and permits within that choice before comparing prices across the two countries.
