Renjo La Pass: Gokyo crossing, route choices and the Thame exit
Renjo La links Gokyo with Lungden and the Thame-valley side. Compare a Gokyo circuit with Three Passes, crossing-day estimates and the direct-valley alternative.

What Renjo La adds to a Gokyo trek
Renjo La Pass links Gokyo with Lungden on the western, Thame-valley side of the Everest region. A Gokyo and Renjo La trip can visit the lakes and return through a different valley without including Everest Base Camp, Kongma La or Cho La. In a Kongma-first Three Passes circuit, Renjo La is the last of the three crossings.
Choose the Renjo route if that western crossing is part of the trip you want. If the lakes are the priority and you do not want a high pass, compare an out-and-back Gokyo programme using the Dole and Machhermo approach. Gokyo Ri is a separate viewpoint above the village; it is not the pass that leads to Lungden.
World Expeditions: Gokyo and Renjo La programmeGokyo to Lungden: read the whole crossing
World Expeditions describes the Gokyo-to-Lungden crossing as a climb on a zigzag trail through rocky terrain and boulder fields, followed by a steep descent into the valley on the far side. Its Gokyo and Renjo La programme estimates seven to eight hours for that stage. That is the operator’s planning estimate, not a guaranteed duration or a time for reaching the pass alone.
Both this programme and Adventure Consultants continue south from Lungden through the Thame-valley corridor towards Namche. Reversing the crossing changes which side you climb and descend, as well as the approach and overnight sequence. Do not reverse an operator’s day list and assume the resulting altitude plan has been assessed for you.
World Expeditions: Gokyo and Renjo La programmeRenjo La versus Cho La
Renjo La connects Gokyo to the Lungden and Thame-valley side. Cho La connects the Gokyo side via Tragnag with Dzongla and the upper Khumbu side. They solve different route problems: Renjo creates a western loop, while Cho La can link Gokyo with the Base Camp corridor. One is not a substitute crossing to the same destination.
A package promising Gokyo and Base Camp may use Cho La without Renjo La. A package promising Gokyo and Renjo La may never reach Base Camp. Read the named settlements and crossings rather than choosing by the number of viewpoints in the marketing. Neither pass should be treated as a guaranteed easy alternative when the other has poor conditions.
Adventure Consultants: 2026 Three Passes trip notesTrip length: a crossing day is not a complete itinerary
World Expeditions lists its Gokyo and Renjo La programme as 17 days with a 13-day trek. Adventure Consultants’ full Three Passes programme is 26 days. These are different products with different route coverage and services, not competing minimum durations for the same trip.
Separate arrival and preparation, approach walking, time at Gokyo, the pass crossing, the western exit and mountain-flight arrangements. When a shorter quote looks attractive, establish whether it removes a pass, a lake excursion, a rest day, a Kathmandu night or contingency time. The published examples here are comparisons, not recommendations of a universally safe pace.
World Expeditions: Gokyo and Renjo La programmeThe Thame exit needs a current access report
The western return depends on more than being able to reach Renjo La itself. The named operator programmes continue through Lungden and the Thame-valley side towards Namche. Those published itineraries do not independently establish current bridges, trail continuity or available overnight accommodation after the Thame flood.
Before booking a loop, require a dated report covering the pass and the onward Lungden–Thame–Namche corridor, plus the actual lodging or camping arrangement. If that corridor cannot be confirmed, compare a Gokyo return down the Dole and Machhermo valley before committing to the western crossing. Do not assume there is a simple lower bypass once you have crossed. This guide does not certify that the western route is open or closed today.
Adventure Consultants: 2026 Three Passes trip notesSupport, conditions and altitude
FCDO warns of year-round mountain hazards including storms, snow drifts, avalanches, rockfall and glacial crevasses. Renjo La’s inclusion in an advertised trekking programme does not establish dry ground for your departure. Obtain a route-specific equipment assessment and identify who leads the crossing, who accompanies a slower trekker and how a retreat or split group will be managed.
The CDC Yellow Book states that training and physical fitness do not affect altitude-illness risk. A claim that Renjo is the easiest of three passes is not personal medical clearance. This page does not approve an overnight sequence or prescribe treatment; discuss the proposed route and your health with a clinician familiar with high-altitude travel.
FCDO: Nepal trekking hazards, flights and rescue insurancePermits, package inclusions and flights
Nepal Tourism Board explicitly names Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek and Three Passes Trek in its published guide and TIMS provision. Read that alongside the separate park and local arrangements; a generic permits-included line does not identify every document or fee.
World Expeditions’ Gokyo and Renjo La example includes a mix of private camps and lodges, trek meals, guide and porter support, and domestic flights. Those inclusions belong to that product, not to every Renjo La quote. Compare accommodation type, meals, equipment and the cost of changes in writing. FCDO notes that high-mountain flight cancellations are common; protect onward travel and confirm the airport on the actual flight booking. No current departure airport or guaranteed connection is asserted here.

Operator programmes support the named geography, their own durations and inclusions. Published elevation figures differ across the programmes, so this guide does not use one exact pass-height figure to settle insurance eligibility. Obtain cover for the actual maximum route elevation and activities in your written itinerary. Medical statements are limited to the cited CDC guidance; neither this article nor a booking calendar certifies present access.
