Jiri to Lukla trek: the classic approach and modern start points
Compare starting on foot at Jiri with a drive to Bhandar, then follow the lower approach through Sete, Junbesi, Nunthala and Surke to the Everest trail.

Where does a Jiri to Lukla trek start now?
The Jiri approach reaches the Everest trekking corridor through lower Solukhumbu, but a modern package with “Jiri” in its name may start walking farther along the route. Heaven Himalaya’s Jiri programme drives through Jiri and Shivalaya to Bhandar, then walks through Sete, Junbesi, Nunthala, Bupsa and Surke to Phakding.
If your aim is to walk from Jiri itself, specify that before booking: the Jiri-to-Bhandar portion is a vehicle journey in that programme. If your aim is simply to avoid the outbound Lukla flight, the Bhandar start achieves a different, shorter lower approach. Neither description means a road journey ends at Lukla airport.

Bhandar to Sete
Heaven Himalaya lists 6–7 hours. Its description descends towards the Likhu River and passes Kinja before climbing to Sete. Starting farther along the road does not remove the descent and climb on this first walking stage.

Sete to Junbesi
The operator lists 6–7 hours across Lamjura La before descending towards Junbesi. This is a pass crossing, not a low, level valley link; seasonal conditions matter even before the main Everest trail.

Junbesi to Nunthala
The published stage is 6–7 hours. It takes the route east towards the Taksindu area and down towards Nunthala, bringing this approach towards the corridor used by the Salleri route.

Nunthala to Bupsa
The itinerary lists 5–6 hours. This lower-valley stage continues towards Bupsa before the approach heads on towards Paiya and Surke.

Bupsa to Surke
The operator lists 5–6 hours. Surke, also written Surkhe, is below Lukla; reaching it is not the same as reaching the airport village.

Surke to Phakding
The final listed approach stage is 5–6 hours to Phakding. Continuing towards Base Camp does not require an outbound night in Lukla in this itinerary. Arrange an explicit Lukla village leg if that is your actual endpoint.

How many extra days does the Jiri approach need?
The cited Bhandar-start itinerary has a Kathmandu-to-Bhandar drive followed by six walking stages to Phakding. Those are six days before its Phakding-to-Namche stage, not six days from Kathmandu to Base Camp. Starting on foot at Jiri adds the earlier section omitted by the drive; the exact additional stages depend on the chosen walking start and overnight stops.
Do not compare “20-day Jiri trek” with “14-day Everest trek” by subtraction alone. Package totals can include Kathmandu nights, airport transfers and different return modes. Compare the first common walking point, Phakding, and the actual nights before it. The quoted times are the named operator’s estimates, not personal fitness targets.
Heaven Himalaya: Jiri programme starting at BhandarJiri or Salleri: which lower approach suits the trip?
Choose the Jiri corridor if you specifically want the Sete, Lamjura and Junbesi section before the approaches converge towards the Taksindu and lower Dudh Koshi area. Choose Salleri if that earlier western section is not part of your objective: the cited Salleri programme uses four walking stages to Phakding rather than the Bhandar programme’s six.
That comparison is between the two named published stage plans, not a universal two-day saving. Different roadheads, overnight choices and walking pace change it. A farther road transfer is another option, but it omits more of the walking you may have chosen the Jiri approach to experience.
Exciting Nepal: detailed Salleri approach itineraryCheck the road start, return mode and full cost
Heaven Himalaya’s detailed programme gives an 8–9-hour road day to Bhandar and describes muddy, bumpy single-lane sections beyond Jiri. That is a product estimate, not a road-opening notice or a timetable. FCDO warns that Nepal’s mountain roads are poor and flooding and landslides can cut off places for days. A later roadhead is usable only if conditions permit it.
The same Jiri programme lists a return flight after walking back to Lukla. Its generic inclusions also mention a round-trip Kathmandu–Lukla flight despite the road approach in the day-by-day plan. Resolve that inconsistency in the written quote: name the road start, the actual flight sectors, the return airport and the included vehicle legs. Budget for the added lodge, meal, guide and porter days rather than assuming a saved outbound flight makes the whole trek cheaper.
Heaven Himalaya: Jiri programme starting at BhandarThe longer walk is not altitude clearance
The route includes repeated climbs and descents before joining the main Everest trail. Do not treat those days as proof that you can skip later acclimatisation time or as evidence that the trip is suitable for every child, older walker or first-time trekker. This guide describes approach stages, not a medically approved Base Camp schedule.
FCDO identifies altitude illness and sudden weather changes among Nepal trekking hazards, advises using reputable trekking support, and says insurance should cover mountain rescue and helicopter costs. Starting by road does not remove the permit requirements for the onward protected-area trek.
