Namche to Tengboche trek: route, distance and the final climb

Follow the Tengboche branch via Kyangjuma and Phunki Thenga, compare endpoint-specific distances and distinguish a monastery stop from a Deboche overnight.

How far is Namche to Tengboche?

The Namche to Tengboche route goes through Kyangjuma, descends to the river at Phunki Thenga and then climbs through forest to the monastery ridge. Discovery World Trekking quotes approximately 10 km and six hours for its Namche–Tengboche/Deboche stage. Treat that as an operator estimate with a named endpoint, not an exact lodge-to-lodge measurement.[5]

A shorter figure you may see is Exodus’s 6.4 km to Thyangboche, another spelling of Tengboche. Its walk starts from Kyanjuma after the previous night there, not from Namche. Those figures describe different starting points; the shorter one is not evidence of a shortcut from Namche.[1]

Namche to Tengboche: the main sections

    Namche Bazaar to Kyangjuma

Leave Namche along the route towards Kyangjuma. This is the additional approach that is absent from the Exodus stage beginning at Kyanjuma. The two spellings Kyangjuma and Kyanjuma refer to that same route stop.[1][5]

    Descend to Phunki Thenga

The Tengboche route drops to the river at Phunki Thenga, written Phunki Thangkha by Exodus. The river crossing comes before the forest climb; the route is not a steady uphill line from Namche to the monastery.[1][5]

    Climb through forest to Tengboche

From the river the trail climbs steeply through forest to Tengboche. This is the main uphill section of the approach, so the opening traverse does not describe the effort of the whole stage.[1][5]

Tengboche or Deboche: where does the walk finish?

Tengboche is the monastery stop on the ridge. Deboche, also written Devoche, is farther along after a descent through forest. Discovery World Trekking describes roughly another kilometre and 20–30 minutes from Tengboche to Deboche. These are approximate onward-section figures, not a promise of arrival time.[1][5]

The overnight village changes where the day ends. A programme can visit Tengboche monastery and then sleep at Deboche. If your accommodation list says Deboche, do not treat reaching the monastery as reaching your lodge. Conversely, starting the following walk in Deboche omits the initial descent from Tengboche.

The Phortse branch is a different route

Not every Base Camp itinerary goes from Namche to Tengboche on the outward walk. Intrepid’s displayed itinerary for 1 January 2027 onwards takes a fork after Sanasa to Phortse Gaon, then continues via Pangboche towards Dingboche. Its notes specify Tengboche instead of Phortse Gaon in December, January and February.[2]

That is a programme-specific seasonal substitution, not proof that a branch is open or closed on your dates. A Namche–Phortse walking estimate cannot be used as the time for Namche–Tengboche. Compare the village sequence in the dated trip notes before comparing headline distances.

Meals, the lodge and the monastery visit

Exodus lists a teahouse night and breakfast for its Kyanjuma–Tengboche stage. That inclusion does not make lunch, dinner or optional lodge services part of every trek package. Read the meal line separately from the accommodation line when comparing quotes.[1]

Allow for the monastery visit in the programme, but do not convert an operator’s arrival description into a guaranteed prayer-session time. For the village-versus-lodge choice and the limitations of published monastery visiting information, use the Tengboche guide.

Walking time is not an ascent recommendation

FCDO warns that altitude sickness is a risk in Nepal’s trekking areas. A quoted six-hour walk describes a route estimate, not medical clearance or a reason to omit planned time in Namche. This guide does not set an ascent schedule or certify that continuing uphill is appropriate for an individual traveller.[4]
