Tengboche monastery: visiting, village stays and route choices
Understand the Tengboche monastery stop, the approach from Namche, the difference from Devoche and why festival dates need monastery-specific confirmation.
Why include Tengboche?
Tengboche is a monastery-centred stop on the Everest Base Camp route. It suits an itinerary that includes time for a Buddhist monastery visit rather than only passing through a named overnight point. Nepal Tourism Board lists lodges, rest houses and camping areas, as well as afternoon monastery tours.[2] The published tourism description is not a same-day opening notice. Leave space for a visit during your stop, but do not promise yourself a particular prayer session or unrestricted access to the temple.
[2] Nepal Tourism Board: TengbocheThe approach from Namche and the river crossing
On the route described by Exodus, walkers descend to Phunki Thangkha, cross the river and climb through forest to Tengboche, which the operator also spells Thyangboche. Those spellings refer to the same stop.[3] This river descent and uphill approach explain why a straight-line gap on a map is misleading. Exodus’s own preceding night is Kyanjuma, not Namche: its kilometre figure for the following stage must not be presented as the whole Namche-to-Tengboche distance.
[3] Exodus: Base Camp itinerary and lodge facilitiesTengboche versus Devoche: name the actual overnight village
Tengboche is the monastery stop on the ridge. Devoche, also written Deboche, is farther along the route after descending through the forest. Exodus continues from Devoche across the Imja Khola towards Pangboche and then Dingboche.[3] The distinction matters when comparing a package’s monastery visit with its accommodation list. A visit to Tengboche does not by itself tell you whether you sleep by the monastery or continue down to Devoche. Use the named overnight village in the booking description rather than treating the whole stage as one location.
[3] Exodus: Base Camp itinerary and lodge facilitiesAllow time for the monastery, not a fixed performance
Nepal Tourism Board describes Tengboche as an active Buddhist centre and identifies afternoon tours. A practical visit starts with the access arrangements on the day. Ask the monastery staff where visitors may enter and whether photography is permitted before taking pictures indoors.[2] If a ceremony is underway, follow the instructions given there rather than treating a trek timetable as permission to interrupt. No verified daily prayer time, admission fee or photography entitlement is supplied by the sources used for this guide.
[2] Nepal Tourism Board: TengbocheMani Rimdu: Tengboche and Thame are not one calendar
UNESCO identifies Mani Rimdu at Tengboche, Thame and Chiwang, but specifically assigns the fourth Tibetan lunar month, corresponding to May and June, to Thame. That passage must not be used to date a Tengboche visit.[5] Nepal Tourism Board’s Tengboche page describes an October festival in general terms.[2] Neither source supplies a confirmed set of Tengboche public festival dates for your trip. If the festival is the reason for travelling, obtain the monastery-specific year and public ceremony days before fixing a non-refundable trek. This guide does not repeat an unverified 2026 date.
[5] UNESCO: Mani Rimdu and its different monastery calendarsWhen the monastery visit appears in a package
The published Exodus itinerary visits Tengboche on its outward route. Other programmes can place the visit on the return, so the absence of an outward Tengboche night need not mean the monastery is omitted. Compare both directions of the itinerary rather than just its first few nights.

Beyond Devoche and Pangboche, Dingboche is a different kind of stop: teahouse accommodation and a base used by trekking programmes for time in the upper valley. Its village guide separates facilities from the optional outings named in tour itineraries.

For shopping, the Saturday market and the park visitor centre, use the Namche guide. These are different reasons to allocate time from the monastery visit at Tengboche.

A route that passes through Pangboche does not automatically include its monastery or an overnight there. Compare the through-stop with a named lodge stay before choosing the next part of the programme.
